Physics‐Based Model Reconciles Caldera Collapse Induced Static and Dynamic Ground Motion: Application to Kīlauea 2018

چکیده
Inflationary deformation and very long period (VLP) earthquakes frequently accompany basaltic caldera collapses, yet current interpretations do not reflect physically consistent mechanisms. We present a lumped parameter model accounting for block/magma momentum change, magma chamber pressurization, ring fault (assumed vertical) shear stress drop. Pressurization of the underlying is represented by tri-axial expansion source, combined change vertical single force. The applied to Kīlauea 2018 collapse events, accurately predicting near field static/dynamic ground motions. In addition force contributes significantly VLP waveforms. For an average event with fully developed fault, Bayesian inversion constrains drop ∼0.4 MPa pressure increase ∼1.9 MPa. That predictions fit both geodetic seismic observations confirms that captures dominant

Approximate Incremental Dynamic Analysis Using Reduction of Ground Motion Records
Incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) requires the analysis of the non-linear response history of a structure for an ensemble of ground motions, each scaled to multiple levels of intensity and selected to cover the entire range of structural response. Recognizing that IDA of practical structures is computationally demanding, an approximate procedure based on the reduction of the number of ground m...
متن کاملNonlinear Dynamic Analysis of Pile Foundation Subjected to Strong Ground Motion Using Fiber Elements
In this paper, pile behavior embedded in layered soil deposits subjected to seismic loadings is analyzed using a nonlinear fiber element for simulation of soil – pile interactions. In the created model, both pile and surrounding soil are modeled using fiber elements in a practical Beam on Nonlinear Winkler Foundation (BNWF) concept. Herein, the features of DRAIN–3DX finite element software are ...

متن کاملCaldera rim collapse: A hidden volcanic hazard
Following the emblematic fl ank collapse of Mount St Helens in 1981, numerous models of flank sliding have been proposed. These models have allowed to largely improve the understanding of mechanisms involved in such landslides, which represent a tremendous risk for populations living around volcanoes. In this article, a new mode of landslide formation, related to buried calderas, is described. ...
